A Message From Mary-Ellen Powers

Hi Friends! My name is Mary-Ellen Powers. I am a Special Olympics Rhode Island athlete. I participate in swimming and unified bowling on the Bristol County Baysiders team, and I also participate in Unified Sailing. Although those sports haven’t returned yet, I have been fortunate to participate in other sports with Special Olympics RI since last March! Last year was a great opportunity to practice a new sport from home, and this past Spring I joined Track with my team. I participated in the 50-meter dash for one of my Virtual State Summer Games events! I also enjoy participating in Virtual Fitness Classes. I am a co-host on "Special Olympics Rhode Island Magazine" and I am a global messenger. I am an At-Large member on the US Athlete Leadership Council, and I am an athlete representative on the US Unified Leadership committee. I am very excited to be participating in the Torch Run Plunge again! On Sunday, December 5th, I will once again be taking the plunge with a great group of friends who are athletes and we call ourselves the Arctic Athletes! All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit over 4,000 athletes like myself who participate in Special Olympics Rhode Island. Any kind of donation would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much! Mary-Ellen P.

Special Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports, every day around the world. Through sports, health, education and community programming, Special Olympics is tackling inactivity, intolerance, isolation and injustice that people throughout the world face, especially people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Rhode Island is one of the state’s most dynamic programs, providing over 1,600 year-round sports training and athletic competition opportunities to more than 4,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Rhode Island hosts over 40 statewide tournaments and competitions each year in 20 official and demonstration sports.
