A Message From Emily Raftery-Smith
IT'S YEAR 16, BABY!
16 years of the Penguin Plunge and it hasn't gotten old yet! Another year comes to an end, a new one begins, and so we carry on our traditions. If you know me and my family, you already know we hold Special Olympics Rhode Island close to our hearts, along with the legacy of the Penguin Plunge.
For over 30 years, my Grampy, Richard Raftery, took part in a wild bunch of people who jumped into the frigid waters of the Narragansett Bay every New Year's Day. I was lucky enough to join him once to ring in the New Year in 2011, and since his passing later that year my mom, sister, and I have been committed to keeping his memory alive through this very special tradition. Every year without fail we make our way to the beach in our bathing suits, brace the cold, cling to each other, and take the plunge. It's an experience unlike any other, and I highly encourage you to join us (at least once)!!
If you aren't up for the physical challenge, we are also raising money for Special Olympics Rhode Island, who have been sponsoring this event for FIFTY YEARS! Please make a donation if you are able to! Special Olympics has been a huge part of my professional and personal life. I wouldn't be who I am today without the athletes, partners, and coaches I've met throughout my journey as a volunteer/partner with the West Bay Knights and SORI!!
The IDD (intellectual and developmental disability) community thrives on support from programs like Special Olympics and the amazing people who contribute to their cause. Now more than ever we need to uplift and create spaces for disabled voices and help pave the path to a more inclusive world.
Peace, Love, and Happy Plunging,
Emily
